ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard Syllabus

Pre requisites none! This is the best place to learn to sail as a beginner. Learn to skipper a 20′ – 27′ sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards

1 Session 4 Hours

  • Class Time Discussion 1 hour
  • Discuss course
  • Vocabulary
  • Points of sail
  • Safety, Float plan, boating accidents, BAC limits
  • cleat hitch and square knots
  • Check on the boat 3 hours
  • Review equipment and rigging
  • Sail all points of sail
  • takeoff and landing on the dock.

2 Session 4 Hours

  • Class Time Discussion 1 hour
  • Discuss objective for boat time.
  • Review Vocabulary, Points of sail, Safety, knots
  • Aids to Navigation
  • MOB procedures
  • clove hitch and round turn knots
  • Check on the boat 3 hours
  • Review equipment and rigging
  • Sail all points of sail
  • practice MOB
  • takeoff and landing on the dock.

3 Session 4 Hours

  • Class Time Discussion 1 hour
  • Discuss objective for boat time.
  • Review Vocabulary, Points of sail, Safety, Aids to Navigation, MOB procedures, knots
  • BOWLINE KNOT and figure 8
  • Check on the boat 3 hours
  • Review equipment and rigging
  • Sail all points of sail without coaching
  • practice MOB
  • takeoff and landing on the dock.
